Increased wood stocks

Nyhet | Statistik - 06 May 2025

The stocks of pulpwood and pulp chips as of March 31 were significantly larger than at the same time last year, according to the Swedish Forest Agency's stock survey. The stocks of softwood sawlogs were also slightly larger.

In total, the stocks of softwood sawlogs, pulpwood and pulp chips totalled 9.5 million cubic metres as of 31 March 2025. This is 15 percent more than for the same period last year, but in line with the average for the past five years. The increase compared to last year mainly concerns pulpwood and pulp chips:

  • Softwood sawlogs 3.4 million cubic metres (+4%)
  • Pulpwood 5.2 million cubic metres (+19%)
  • Pulp chips 1 million cubic metres (+34%)

Stocks of softwood sawlogs were 4 percent higher as of March 31 compared to 2024, but 4 percent lower than the five-year average for the same date (2020–2024). Stocks of softwood pulpwood (including spruce pulpwood) amounted to just under 4 million cubic metres, which is 15 percent more than for the same period in 2024 but 4 percent less than the average for the corresponding period from 2020 to 2024.

Hardwood pulpwood stocks saw the largest relative increase, amounting to approximately 1.2 million cubic metres. This is 39 percent more than in March 2024, and 28 percent higher than the five-year average.

Stocks of roundwood for energy purposes

As of March 31, 2025, the reported stock of roundwood intended for energy purposes was approximately 550,000 cubic metres. It is important to note that the volume only represents the companies included in the Swedish Forest Agency's survey, i.e. larger forest industry companies, pulp and pulp industries, sawmills and purchasing organizations.

The relatively large increase compared to the same time in 2024 is mainly due to a lower response rate from several key companies at that time. As such, comparisons between the years should be interpreted with caution. Although these figures do not yet meet the quality standards required for inclusion in official statistics, we have chosen to publish them due to their public relevance. The Swedish Forest Agency continues to work actively to improve the coverage and quality of this data.
