Low stocks of softwood sawlogs

The stocks of softwood sawlogs on 31 December were slightly lower than at the turn of last year and significantly lower than the average for the past five years, according to the Swedish Forest Agency's stock survey.

Continued increase in infringement compensation

In 2024, the Swedish Forest Agency paid out nearly SEK 324 million in infringement compensation to landowners for denied felling permission in montane forests. This marks a continued increase since 2020, when the first compensation payments totalling SEK 3 million were issued. At the same time, the area designated for the establishment of formally protected areas by the Swedish Forest Agency decreased in 2024 to the lowest level since 1996.

Roundwood prices increased in 2024

In 2024 the roundwood prices on delivery timber increased for sawlogs by 30 percent and the price of pulpwood increased by 18 percent compared to 2023. Roundwood prices rose across all regions. This is shown in the Swedish Forest Agency's statistics on roundwood prices for delivery timber.

An increase in notified felling in December

The latest statistics from the Swedish Forest Agency show that the area notified or applied for felling in December 2024 increased 42 percent, compared to December 2023. The area regarding applications for permits for final felling in montane forests increased eight fold, compared to the December 2023.
